Attached you find flier a for a family soccer night sponsored by NW CJSA. The district decided to help each member by contributing $10.00 per participant. The final cost including the bus ride is $30.00 per seat. NW CJSA would like to have has many participants as possible for this event. If successful, they will try to do it more often or at least once a season.
The two hours before game will be used to enjoy the different activities that the Red Bulls offer on their grounds. NW CJSA asks that ALL kids wear their Club Jersey.
The bus will leave from the Southbury Crown Plaza hotel at 12:00 pm sharp. If any one misses the bus they will have to drive and pick up their tickets at "will call". We are planning for 3 buses. DO NOT WAIT to promote the event this will be a "first pay first go" deal. |

ALL NEW Players and anyone who hasn’t played in NUSC since the spring season of 2011, or any child who outgrew their uniform need to order a uniform before March 5, 2012. (If your child(ren) has played for Northwest United in the fall of 2010, then only the purchase of a new jersey is required as long as the black shorts and black socks still fit. If your child(ren) played for Berkshire United, then only the purchase of a new jersey and black socks are required as long as the black shorts still fit.) To order your Uniform On-Line: Please follow the directions below to order your child(ren)'s uniforms: - Go to http://www.stadiumsystem.net/
- Click on the red box that says REQUIRED TEAM GEAR and fill out the required information.
- Enter WENWUSC in the special code box.
- The website will confirm your account and then click on continue to place your order. This will bring up the Northwest United team gear to order from.
- Then follow the directions to finalize order and check out.
- Please note that the website mentions a shipping and handling charge. This is really just a handling charge (Stadium Systems can’t change the wording.) The uniforms do not ship to you. The coaches will pick them up from Stadium Systems and deliver them to your child(ren) at practice before their first game.
If you do not have internet access: Call or go to Stadium Systems directly and speak with Wendy to order your child(ren)’s Uniform. See contact details below. To Try on Uniforms before ordering: Stadium Systems have sample sizes of the uniform components for your child to try on. If you have a child that usually has sizing issues, I would recommend bringing your child in to try them on. This will also give you the opportunity to size up a little to get more life out of their uniforms before they out grow them. :) Stadium Systems is located in Canaan, CT right off of route 7. It is across from North Elm Street on left. If you have any troubles, please contact Wendy at Stadium Systems. Greetings to All!As the spring season starts to come into focus, we on the Northwest United board would like to share some thoughts about the topic above: kids, soccer and concussions.
As you may or may not be aware, many in the medical community believe that soccer is second only to football in terms of the incidence of concussion, or TBI (traumatic brain injury), among youth players. While many coaches and parents believe they are aware of concussion symptoms, best practices as regards the prevention and treatment of concussions have been changing and prompted, first by parent Mary O'Neil and second by coach and parent Gifford Miller, we are hoping to raise awareness in order to best protect our kids. Kicks to the head, impact with the other players, impact with the ground or goalposts, impact on the lower jaw, whiplash-like movement, even heading: all are now understood to have the potential to generate TBI. The Center for Disease Control website (http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/youth.html) provides a comprehensive overview.Colleges and many secondary schools, including some in this area, are taking steps to aid in the diagnosis of concussions. If a concussion is not diagnosed and consequently not treated, players are even more at risk for subsequent concussions, and many seem to feel that the compound effect of the multiple concussions is where the greatest danger for children lies. Some authorities believe that as much as 75% of concussions are undiagnosed. The first step that many institutions have taken is the administration of a cognitive test to players of at-risk sports. This establishes a baseline to compare to a later test should a concussion be suspected. Some of these tests are available on line. We have located one provided by Axon Sports. They specialize in this kind of testing and their website is very informative (www.axonsports.com) Both the baseline and the after-injury tests are simple and quick and done with playing cards so that it functions for all ages. The cost is $7.50 for the baseline and $7.50 for an after-injury test. NUSC does not endorse this test in particular, and there are others available, but we wanted to give you an example of resources that you, as parents, can take advantage of. In addition, there are headbands now being marketed which are intended to absorb impact. The headbands are breathable, sweat-absorbing cloth on the outside with a "polymeric layer " inside. They are intended to protect the head as much as possible and also facilitate heading, and several of our coaches require that their own kids wear them.
We have asked Stadium Systems to carry an impact-absorbing headband and they are, both in their store and on line when uniforms are ordered (information on that to come). They have given the us the very good price of $10, less than many other retailers. There are other headband brands available as well and parents should feel free to choose the one they think is best. As always, anyone who needs help with these expenses should feel free to get in contact with the board at this email address.Brain injury in a child is a very scary thought. Our board members and coaches are in agreement on the seriousness of the problem, and all that I have spoken with will be requiring their children to wear them. Everyone must make their own decisions but we believe that if you take five minutes to look over the references in the links above, the evidence suggests that getting pro-active is the best thing to do in terms of safety. We are excited for a tremendous spring soccer season and are committed to make it as fun and safe as possible for all of the kids in our program. |

The clinic featuring coaches from UK International, led by Antony Howard, will take place on Sunday, January 8. Please contact your coach for details.
The gym is located on Skiff Mountain Road just off the intersection from Route 341. From Route 7 turn west down Route 341 and take a right immediately after the bridge over the Housatonic. The gym is the large white building behind the football field. Cars should take the first left into the drive about 100 yards from the intersection. People can park behind the gym and along the driveway to the gym (just don’t park in the driveways of the two faculty houses that are there). There is a small patch of lawn right by the entrance that is for parking as well – as long as it is frozen it is a preferred parking area. Parking can also be had in the lot which is the next left just past the tennis courts. On a Sunday morning that is often filled with tennis players at the indoor courts. A third place to park would be at the Boathouse/Rowing Center which is before the gym entrance.
